I've been worried this is an issue for a while now. Thanks for putting it into words.

It is a real issue. I think we will see more research on in over the next few years.

I am guilty of polishing my writing with AI.

I often find that there are ideas that I could have said better and learn from it. The clever ways there are to enhance a point. Words I wouldn’t have used and now I know.

Now with the world full of “perfect” papers and enhanced ideas; I find that the ones that convey the most emotion tend to be the most human. Recently a friend posted: “ one of those heart thingies,” to refer to a “like button”. That, resonated more with me than all the perfect papers I’ve been writing.

I am not saying I will stop going to AI for help when I can. I see the benefits. But I also see the downfall when there was no original thought or a more involved participation.

Our creativity getting atrophied , our brain doing what it was designed to do. Recognize the most efficient way of getting to a goal. But when the goal is to post and get money. The way in the middle, the part where growth happens gets circumvented to the point of shrinkage.

Thank you for this article. Interestingly– a beautiful read.

100% agree with you here. i used ai to fact check this, to fix typos, to create the images, etc. I just don't want our creativity to atrophy away. It's the flaws and differences in our writings that make them interesting. Thanks so much for reading =)

I seem to have discovered I like the Emotional and Flaws pieces. I connect more with Authors.

Omg, I loved this post. It's all I've been thinking about lately. Just today I shared similar thoughts on LinkedIn, the capital city of flat and forgettable writing.

i do have a linkedin, and it’s the flattest of the flat. like maybe prime example 1 of what this will all become if we let it.

thanks for the engagement Karo, it’s been great connecting on substack here!

"The tool lifts the floor by LOWERING THE CEILING." This line alone was worth the price of admission. A blistering post also makes me think what that room full of monkeys would have been able to produce if they'd have had ChatGPT instead of a typewriter...

hah. love the call to the monkeys and typewriters. this was a super interesting experiment on how ai is effecting us at scale. what i found most interesting it the user experience was much better, despite the end product being more uniform.

Well said……we definitely do not want to give human creativity over to AI , I love how much help AI is for productivity but the creativity especially writing needs to stay with us humans.

Thank you! fully agree. You can see this piece uses AI for art, to find typos, and I used it for fact checking as well. So I'm not against the tool. We just need to keep the creativity alive!
